The WSPA
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is an organisation aiming to promote protection, prevent cruelty and relieve the inhumane treatment of animals in every part of the world. WSPA works on programmes concerned with commercial exploitation of wildlife, companion animals and disaster relief projects as well as representing the world's largest federation of animal welfare societies, with over 500 societies in over 100 countries.
Walking for WSPA
In particular, this walk is raising funds for WSPA's work with bears, the 'Liberty Campaign'. The charity is trying to end bear bile farming in SE Asia, and, in February 2005, succeeded in persuading the Vietnamese government to phase out this practice. There is, however, much work still to be done, especially in China and Korea. Other projects, such as ending the suffering of bears dancing for tourists in Pakistan and India and the rehabilitation of black bear orphans in Idaho are also needing urgent funding.
